Wanted to share with you all under 24 hours to go until my visit to the consultant to get my foot xrayed and hopefully pins removed! I'm excited to have a good foot soak and see my pinkies again after 6 weeks bandaged up.....feels sore still, then what does one expect after surgery! I shall put a post on tomorrow evening to let you all know how it is looking. Jane Xxx

Oh, good luck! I do hope they can remove all the foreign objects. You will feel so much better if you can give the area a good wash and see it looking more normal. The physio (I assume you are doing physio) will be easier too.....though they will probably give you tougher exercises to do!. I hope you can get back on your feet and make a good recovery. Naomi, X

Hi Naomi Than you for your message, I'm looking forward to having a good wash/shower again and see my feet! No mention of pysio yet, had a fact sheet saying to bend foot forward and back just after the op, may have that to come! The best thing is the rheumy team can help me with my flare up.......there's pain, and PAIN!!!! Feel like tin tin from wizard of oz. Take care Jane Xxx

I had my pins out today, what a wimp I was thinking it would be painful!! The nurse undid the bandage and dressing, gave it a clean. I asked to lie down when the consultant came in to check it all over and pull the pins out. It didn't hurt and felt nothing! Been signed off for a few more weeks. There is swelling, can't get it wet until 24 hours whilst the holes where the pins were closes up.......be a treat to have a shower! I had to give up my hospital shoe, took the other half of a clarks shoe I bought on line in the sale - felt like bambi, wibbled back to the car! I popped a pair of crocs on when I got home. I've left a message on ra hospital helpline for help with my flare up, hopefully they call soon. Didn't feel upto driving on the way back - hopefully soon. I said to the consultant "I won't be having the other foot done yet will I? He said no.......not yet". I'm happy with the reply! When ra is controlled and behaving, I'm so happy and think I haven't got anything wrong with me....but times like this I try so hard to deal with the pain its like an emotional rollercoaster - just have to hold on tight! So glad it wasn't as bad as you were dreading- I was surprised at how painless it was too, I think it's just the thought of it! I had a special built up shoe to wear for a while which took the pressure off the toes? Do use a stick. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Morning. I'm shocked........my ra helpine at the hospital called me back this morning, snooty nurse implied I was wasting her time by requesting a steriod injection after pins are out! I said your colleague told me to phone once pins are out because of a huge, painful flareup - said I'm not one to call until the pain is high. She said well you have an appointment with the consultant week Friday, you need to wait until then. And I was to keep taking the painkillers! Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh so much for the "helpline" my first negative experience with rheumy guys. I said sorry for wanting help, I will go now, she said well you have an appointment anyway. I was so glad to have pins out, so I can be injected - and be mobile! Glad of my sticks! Popped two painkillers.....roll on week Friday, I shall let the consultant know about their "unhelpful" service. Rant finished. Watching olympic rowing....cor their fit men! Hehehehe

That's dreadful Jane. Would it be possible to get a steroid injection from your GP? I know not all GPs do this but it's worth a try. It's just not good enough to be told to sit out the pain for another two weeks!
Love Doreen xx

Hi Doreen Thank for your message, I have ask doctors surgery before and they refer me back to rheumy nurses. In over 5 years of having ra, the care, respect, listening and attitude has been positive until today. I don't like to pester because they have lots of people to see and I prefer to get on with my life - we all have better things to do. I spoke to a nurse at Marlbrough hospital yesterday when she cleaned my foot up, said that Emma the ra lady from the team that work in ra has recently retired - she was so positive and approachable.....times maybe changing :-( 9 days 2 hours till my steriod injection........ My sick note runs out 4 days after my appointment.....let's hope my body recovers quickly, flare up gone and the odd handstand-only joking! Jane Xxx

Hi Jane I'm going to sound like I'm being really awkward here, sorry, but with an appointment so close it possibly wouldn't make good sense to do a steroid injection which may affect future treatment choices. You would perhaps turn up for your appointment under the control of steroid which wouldn't necessarily be representative of your actual state. I would suggest requesting stronger pain relief, as a temporary measure, from your GP to get you through the coming week or so; it is the GP's job to prescribe pain control. Steroid injections aren't without risk, they do pump large doses into the system which can affect things like BP, heart rate and liver and kidney function. Also, because the pins are out doesn't mean internal wounds are healed yet and steroid will affect the healing process. Please don't lose trust in your Rheumatologist over this especially after 5 years of positivity. Good luck, hope things are healing well. Lyn x

Hi Jane - so sorry to hear about your diappointing phone call - you must have felt absolutely gutted. I would've had a good cry if it'd been me!!! However, I also agree with Lyn - maybe it's better to see the consultant at your worst so they can adjust your meds as needed. I had a similar experience before I was actually diagnosed, and steroid jabs I kept having in my knees masked the true extent of the symptoms so in my case it caused confusion and delayed diagnosis and starting dmards. It doesn't help with your pain, but at least it could help to rationalise the waiting! Best wshes - Sylvia xx Be kinder than is necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Hi Lyn & Sylvia The appointment next friday with the consulant was pre op check and see if I'd fallen pregnant, the past few months was my last chance to try for a baby. As it was the operation was brought forward from September to June (maybe others ran away when their dates was sent out). I called the ra helpline when I had my date, they said keep the appointment for August with rheumy consultant. A couple of weeks ago I rung ra helpline to say I'm having a flare up and feel awful, the lovely nurse said keep with painkillers and ring us as soon as your pins are out and we can get you steriod injection. So, this monday I shuffled to the doctors for blood, so ra nurses will have results back to see how its all effecting me. Obviously on the advice of a kind nurse, I was geared to injections! I don't want to go back to the doctors for stronger pain killers, I will battle on with pain. Because I've been laid up, it so has not helped me. The most upsetting thing is knowing I be going on methtrix next week, and my last chance of trying for a baby has gone. I have accepted that I need more medication, okay I'm never going to be a ballet dancer when I feel better!!! I felt shocked that the ra helpine would not listen to me, and implied I should be grateful I have an appointment anyway! I tried to explain what her colleague had advised me a few weeks ago, but she would not listen. I don't like to pester the hospital unless my pain is slowing me down, and I need medication to calm ra down. Plus side, this flareup isn't for ever! I do enjoy the forum, see your thoughts looking in...........I'm not cross or upset, I have the olympics to cheer on! Jane Xxxx

Hiya Sylvia. What fantastic olympics! Saw cycling - my daufghter is into shouting at the television "go team GB" !!! Watching swimming, Becky got a bronze - YES! I treated myself today, had my hair washed, cut and blowdried! Feel fantastic....even hobling along on my sticks! I drove for the first time in 6 weeks.....it was fine and did not cause further pain when changing gear. I noticed my petrol nearly gone...shall ask him in doors to top up for me (no harm in asking). I went online to treat myself to a pair of furry crocs in pink....sold out of my size. Instead I treated my daughter to her first ever pair of linned crocs. I have a pair furry crocs anyway in dark blue, so they will make do for now! I think we maybe national trusting again over the weekend subject to the weather and watching the olympics on the telly. Have a lovely weekend to you all. Jane Xxx

Hi Jane - your toes look nce and straight now - do you have a "before" pic? My bunions are quite big but I've no hammer toes, so I don't think I'm bad enough for surgery but maybe in the future ..... Glad it's all improving - slow but sure is always best! Sylvia x Be kinder than is necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Hi Sylvia Glad u liked my foot! I know it's not everyone's cup of tea to view photos of post op stuff. I did have a before photo, it was a close up of the bunion swelling. I would say don't have the operation if you feel it isn't bad enough. The consultant does an xray to see if things don't look good! Am happy for a rest before the next foot is done. Signed off sick till end of next week, got rheumy tomorrow pm - hopefully I shall feel better after tomorrow appointment. Still shuffling around on sticks partly foot partly flare up. Been out in my car for a few journeys which is fine driving, getting in and out of car isn't done in a lady like fashion (humour required)! One more nite of pain and tears Jane xx
